PrisonEducation.com Launches Vowing to Combat Recidivism Through Education

Mr. Zoukis – the 25-year-old author of two texts on prison education, contributing editor of the Prison Education Blog, and Editor of the Education Behind Bars Newsletter – has high hopes and expectations for PrisonEducation.com. As he stated, “This has the potential to really effect meaningful change. By providing prison educators with an open venue such as PrisonEducation.com, a community can ensue which – being visible – has the real potential to sway both law makers and the general public to the cause of prison education; a cost-effective method of reducing recidivism.”

PrisonEducation.com’s two primary features are the Prison Education Blog and Education Behind Bars Newsletter; both of which are free and open to the public. On the Prison Education Blog, Mr. Zoukis blogs about prison education news, effective teaching methodologies when dealing with the prison demographic, and the Writing and Publishing class he teaches at FCI-Petersburg. He also publishes his personal research and blogs by other prison education experts such as Janice Chamberlin, author of Locked Up With Success.

The Education Behind Bars Newsletter (EBBN), on the other hand, is set to debut in August. EBBN will feature articles and essays by prison educators (staff and prisoner) and prisoner-students alike. The debut issue of EBBN will contain articles advocating for prison education, critiquing the prison educator’s (staff) and prisoner-tutor’s (prisoner) methodology, and even an alarming piece on Indiana State Prison restricting their funding for higher education; a program which had proven to be effective at reducing recidivism.

Mr. Zoukis hopes that these two venues will provide the platform needed to promote the cause of educating prisoners. As he notes, “My hope for PrisonEducation.com is nothing short of extraordinary. I see a venue for those who educate prisoners, those educated while in prison, and those who research prison education to contribute to the national debate on corrections and methods of reducing recidivism. It is my hope that these people will flock to PrisonEducation.com and contribute their unique voice to the discussion on prison education.”
